Ah! That must be it. I never got a successful completion message, just a hang with a message about going into PASSIVE mode. So some or all of the file must have made it which prevented me from uploading anything by the same name.

[localhost:~/Desktop] kbhend% curl --disable-epsv -T Rigroup_0.81.0.tar.gz ftp://cran.R-project.org/incoming/ [localhost:~/Desktop]

So no error messages and no hang! That seems to have done the trick.

I noticed. I am constantly having problems with many ftp servers and my ftp clients on Linux and Mac OSX. There seems to be some mismatch on how the handoff to PASSIVE mode (and particular epsv) seems to be done. I will always use your curl command from now on.
