Sorry, no direct experience either, but I note that the FAQ for MacOS X has some information on what is needed to install R on a Macintosh, including information on Fortran 77 compilers:

        http://cran.r-project.org/bin/macosx/RMacOSX-FAQ.html

There is also a specific mailing-list for R users on MacOS X:

R-SIG-Mac R Special Interest Group on Mac Development https://stat.ethz.ch/mailman/listinfo/r-sig-mac

The archives of that mailing list might be helpful.

HTH. Cheers,

        Berwin
