Fink was very helpful when OS X was new and not much was
otherwise available, without quite a bit of work in compilation and
setting paths, for Macs. Nowadays it is probably better, especially
for more specialist users, to install the relevant separate Mac
packages. Fink puts software in non-standard places. This
can cause problems in getting paths set up so that one gets the
right version of software, when there's a mix of stuff installed via
Fink and stuff installed directly. Fink may sometimes be a bit slow
in providing updates when new versions become available.
Note however that I have had no very recent experience of Fink.
I gave up using it to install new software some considerable time
ago.
