Thanks.
It may have been a temporary memory allocation problem. I removed the
data.frame and reread the data from the original text file. The
attach function then worked. I share devices between linux and
dec machines and perhaps that upset things.
Thanks to Peter Dalgaard for his help. He also introduced me
(informally) to the str function which is useful in itself. The str
function also thought my object was a dataframe.
