Can we terminate this thread? R already has a function dev2bitmap to
do precisely this, so there is no advantage in re-inventing the wheel.
R's function also work on both Unix and Windows (which I believe Neils
uses) but most of the suggestions do not.

As I pointed out before, R-devel has an even better solution, a native
pdf driver. And R-devel is available (even Windows binaries) for
testing.
