Thanks a million for everyone's help.
However, in technical terms my problem is still not solved. Is there any freely available software which allows one to draw cartograms? If not, is there any free software for which you imagine it would be easy to add an extension to do that? Or maybe someone would be willing to feed my data into a program they have and make one for me -- it's really simple, and I just need one, the data is basically some 100 or so countries with values ranging from 0 to ~ 300. I would be extremely grateful for further suggestions/help.
