It was canonical variance I was asked about and I wasn't careful enough getting the Genstat quote to make sure I was referring to the same thing. It seems SAS uses the term Canonical Variance Analysis and the reference mentioned for it is:

Does anyone know for sure if they are the same thing? It appears to me that someone misheard "variates" as "variance", but that might not be the case. Perhaps SAS likes to use different terminology.
Thank you Brian for the wikipedia link. It doesn't have anything relating to canonical variance analysis which seems to support my suspicions.
