The solution to this appears to be to add -lf2c to the end of the line in
the Makefile that begins

	@$(LD) $(SHLIBLDFLAGS)....

This raises a general issue, though.  What should be done with f2c
translations?  Should we simply assume that everyone has f2c and link with
-lf2c or should we supply copies of routines that are needed in translated
libraries?
