Thomas,

My "moderately small" dataset is an x matrix of size 250x18, certainly
not overwhelming for the subsets() program. Trying your simple examples
revealed that the problem is subsets() cannot deal with character factor
variables. My columns look something like

      X1 X2 X3      X4
 [1,] ++ -- --   98/98
 [2,] ++ -- ++ 133/133
 [3,] ++ -- +-  133/98
 [4,] ++ -- +-  133/98
 [5,] ++ +- --   98/98
 [6,] ++ -- --   98/98
 [7,] ++ -- +- 133/133
 [8,] ++ -- +-  133/98

I'll have to convert them into appropriate numeric vectors before
proceeding further.

Thanks for your response,

Matt
