It's fairly easy to do a straight "DOS" compile of R, if you drop
*all* the Windows stuff. Tried that stunt with a cross-compile from
Linux/gcc (in which case, even the makefiles work). Starting from Unix
sources, there were (essentially) only a few pieces of "X-orcism" needed
and one or two difficulties with nonexisting math functions and
addresses of functions defined as macros. How to get the graphics
window back is an exercise for the reader....
