Subject: R-beta: perl warnings during make

During the make of the current intermediate patch R-release,
I get numerous warnings like this:

data text html latex
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LC_ALL = (unset),
LC_CTYPE = "iso-8859-1",
LANG = (unset)
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

I never had this happen before. What has happened, and how to fix?
Thanks very much for any help.
(Apparently I need to make some locale settings but I have no idea what
that means nor how to do it. I am running Slackware 3.4.0)
