There currently is work on a general purpose 3-d front end and toolkit
(using Java3d) for visualization (and for exploring uses of VR in
statistics), which has been shown to work with R via the socket
interface, and eventually with Omega via CORBA. It's called ORCA.

Grand tour code, preliminary work on linking and brushing, and
infrastructure are somewhat done. Example visualizations have also
been written.

Hopefully, an initial version will be available (under the GNU GPL)
late this fall. And it'll be demo'd at the upcoming joint statistical
meetings in Baltimore (but probably not the R-interface).

best,
-tony
