Here, it works on SUNOS 4.1.3,
         -----    ------
but it fails on Solaris (2.4 & 2.5),
       -----    -------
i.e.  starts "well", but gives the above warning:

Maybe there should be  #ifdef SOLARIS  statements somewhere in the R
code... ? ...
