The as.single function, as written is broken.  It calls an Internal 
as.real, and that doesn't exist.  There are many fixes, but a clean
one is,

desire:/data/R-alpha/0.4/src/library/base> diff as as.keep

<       .Internal(as.vector(x,"real"))

>       .Internal(as.real(x))
