The hasty fix of yesterday has a few problems. In think I have a
complete fix which should work back to X11R1. I will try it out under
some older X's and then make it available for ftp.

I checked out your problem with

	x <- 1:10
	y <- x + rnorm(x)
	fm <- lm(y~x)

on my PC at home (Intel DX-4/100 runnning FreeBSD). I do not see the
same problem. This sounds a bit like a compiler bug ... Could you
find out which version of gcc you are running (gcc -v). FreeBSD has
stuck with the 2.6.3 compiler because the 2.7.* series was regarded as
too unstable.

Can anyone else with Linux try running the three statements above
immediately after starting R and see if there is a problem?
