Ok, I've tried Bill's problem on my Linux station, and had no problem:

> x _ 1:10
> y _ x + rnorm(x)
> fm _ lm(y ~ x)
> fm

Call:
lm(y ~ x)

Coefficients:

 -0.5256555   1.0454489

I suppose when the X11 font loading problem appeared,
R somehow 'stopped'
- either loading  the library/base code
- or allocation of memory

such that later many things were not ok ...
