Subject: R-alpha: 0.6 is available

R-0.6alpha is now available from stat.auckland.ac.nz in pub/R. Here
are the changes.

1. Fixes to data frame code and modelling code. This means that
    both lm(y ~ x) and lm(y ~ 1) will now work.

2. X11 device driver changed so that it will function with earlier
    versions of X.

3. R now detects whether it is being run non-interactively and behaves
slightly differently in the non-interactive case; commands are
echoed to standard output and no graphics device driver is started.
This means that the Unix command "R < input > output" works in a
    sensible fashion.

4. R now has its first "library". It is called "mva" and contains
just a single (undocumented) function "prcomp" which performs
principal components. This is really just a test of functionality
    at this point.

4. The graphics demo script has been fixed to use new functionality.

5. Quite a lot of data documentation has been added. The official
way of finding out about and loading data sets are now:
?data(index) # index of data sets
?data(islands) # help for the islands data set
data(islands) # load the islands data set

The brown bubbly stuff is calling ...
