Robert

If I just wanted to append then append() would be good, but what I
really want to do is append or replace as appropriate. The following
seems dangerous (but is consistent with S):

> z <- list(a=1, b=2)
> append(z, list(b=5, c=6))
$a
[1] 1

$b
[1] 2

$b
[1] 5

$c
[1] 6
