I had exactly the same problem, using an old Slackware based
distribution.  The solutions are:

#1 - use "make -k", since the errors appeared to be harmless.  The
	proper "*.o" files are made, and they worked (at least for
	me). Someone else with real information should correct me!!

#2 - upgrade to a distribution which uses Linux 2.0.x  (i.e. the
	latest redhat, 3.0.(4?)), and has a working f77 emulator
	(either a later f2c or g77).
