  I have had the same problem as Douglas Bates for qr.coef when using the
optimization routine. When there is only one parameter in the function to
be optimized, it gives the error he quotes. (The optimization routine can
also give a warning that it is not suited to such simple problems.)
  I have now checked everything I can think of and apparently the new
optimization is 10-15% slower than that in Fortran (put through f2c on
Linux). Could it be extra overhead in calling the R function to be
optimized?
