I'll point out (as a lurker hoping to find time to install R
soon) that S's factors are seriously (IMHO) broken and the R
developers shouldn't bend over backward trying to emulate their
misfeatures.  I've posted a couple of rants on this topic to
s-news; if anyone's interested in seeing them again, let me
know.
