Subject: R-alpha: R testing

I have been looking at R just before I let a group of our first years loose
on it in an introductory data analysis course. It all looks very
impressive and I am keen to see how they do and how they respond.

One problem I have been having which I wonder if you could enlighten
me is that there seems to be a tendency for the read.table and scan
commands to hang when reading files. The same files are readable in
Splus using the same commands. Am I just being stupid? Is there a way
of interuptimg this hanging (control-c works sometimes sometimes not).

Also is there a FAQ list somewhere so I don't have to waste too mucjh
of your time.

thanks

Paul Marriott
