An R port of ace() and avas() methods for estimating transformations is 
now under
http://www.biostat.washington.edu/~thomas/R.html

The main change in porting FORTRAN is the absence of a single 
precision type in R -- people tend to write this sort of code in single 
precision (I don't know why).
