  This will be fixed in 0.15. R will simply print an error message. 
   "zero is an invalid subscript for data frames"

S returns a list of length 0 with the rownames attribute of the data frame
but we can't easily do that. For us, NULL is the zero length list and it 
doesn't like having attributes. Another option would be to return NULL; 
any strong opinions???
