Perhaps you need 16-bit colour for this.  I've tried it on Linux-elf with
16-bit colour and there are no problems (I start the X server with 
'startx -- -bpp 16'). With 8-bit colour the error occurs sooner or later
depending on what other colour-intensive applications are running.

Some X applications detect when you've run out of colours and use a
private colour map (Should R do this?). Netscape won't do this, however,
which is probably why it won't run after you've run the R graphics demo.
Try 'netscape -install' to use a private colour map. You will experience
interesting psychedelic effects as you move your mouse around.
