Kurt has the fix. For some reason (bug/feature) SunOS doesn't get
annoyed when you forget to return an SEXP and it seems to find something
that makes it happy. In this case, since we only wanted something simple
(a one long logical) it happily provided an answer.
 So following Kurt's advice; add 
  return ans;

as the last line in do_anydf in dataframe.c will cure this problem.
It will be fixed in 0.15
