Subject: R-alpha: invalid left-hand side to assigment

I have some code tests which seem to fairly reliably produce an

Error: invalid left-hand side to assigment

when they don't produce a segmentation fault, but I'm not sure how to debug
this. I see were the message comes from in eval.c, and I could probably
print something at that point, but in the C code I'm not sure what to print
that I might understand. Can anyone make a simple suggestion?
