This seems to fix the problem with incompatible types in subset
assignment. Someone with a better grasp than me of what's supposed to
be going on, please verify.

Here's the fix:

> de
function (..., Modes = NULL, Names = NULL) 
{
        sdata <- list(...)
        snames <- as.character(substitute(list(...))[-1])
                  ^^^^^^^^^^^^

BTW: I've been experiencing strange behaviour with browser()-ing
through these routines. At one point, I found myself with a 

for (...) list({
	...
}) 

construction in de.restore (i.e. the list() appeared out of
"nowhere"), and on another occasion, I had trouble saving the modified
workspace.
