Subject: R-alpha: compatibility mode

For reasons already mentioned by others I worry about a compatibility mode.
I previously had a version of $ which I used to enforce exact matching, and
still occassionaly use as a check on my code. I have largely abandon it for
fear of breaking other code people might use in conjunction with my library.

However, eventually I would really like to have a mode like gcc pedantic
which will not break things but give lots of warning messages about bad or
risky habits.
