Subject: R-alpha: ANNOUNCE: CRAN

This is a first (alpha) announcement for the

		Comprehensive R Archive Network
			    (CRAN)

project.

In a nutshell, the idea is to have a few sites across the world which
carry the R&R R distribution(s), the contributed add-ons, and binary
distributions.

There would be one `original' site, for the time being at the URL

	ftp://ftp.ci.tuwien.ac.at/pub/export/R

and several mirrors. Obvious choices seem to be

	stat.math.ethz.ch
	lib.stat.cmu.edu
	biostat.washington.edu
	stat.wisc.edu

Details have not been worked out yet. (Those in that list who I haven't
contacted prior to sending this message, please forgive me.)

In the short run, the process of `submitting' to the archive would be
very simple: upload to

	ftp://ftp.ci.tuwien.ac.at/incoming

and drop me a note (Kurt.Hornik@ci.tuwien.ac.at). Please indicate the
copyright situation(GPL, ...) in your submission.

In the long run, there will be a form to fill in, and some requirement
of authentication (PGPish, ...), and submission could maybe be done via
WWW. I am open to suggestions here.

The structure of the CRAN tree currently is as follows.

	$CRAN/source/distrib # R&R
	$CRAN/source/contrib # add-ons
	$CRAN/binary/<platform>

where <platform> could e.g. be i386-linux and this could hold packages
for Debian and RPM, as well as tar.gz files relative to an installation
tree (e.g. bin/, lib/R/, and man/man1/R.1). Directory standards are
currently being discussed ...

Of course, I am open to suggestions re a better organization.

Things will start to really `happen' following the release of 0.50,
which should be out any day now.
