I think your dev2bitmap() is a really neat idea!
Further, I didn't know that (newer flavors of) gs allows for so many
different output formats
[for the unaware (as I was till now):
(1997 Aladdin Ghostscript 5.1)
gives 69 devices (not all useful for dev2bitmap),
such as jpeg, tiff, png, pbm, pgm, pcx,...
I think something like it should make it into the distribution
(shall I quickly write docu for it, saying it is somewhat experimental,
even for 0.65.1 ?)
