One reason you may get these warnings is when you try this in AFS
land (maybe also with NFS). As far as I can tell, AFS doesn't allow
the set-gid bit and it wouldn't make much sense anyway for AFS.
So I'm not surprised that some people see a different behavior between
local untaring and untaring on a mounted disk.
Hmm, the odd thing may be that I usually see the set-gid bit only for
directories (where it's "standard" to have them for a Linux box).
