Hi Jim,
If you are reading values in from a file, you can get character vectors like this:

<contents of file "charvec.txt">
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

charvec<-unlist(read.table("charvec.txt",stringsAsFactors=FALSE)) is.character(charvec)
