FYI:
The problem I had was that my modified .Rprofile text file was being read and had lines to load the libraries of packages that were not installed yet on this Ubuntu machine; I guess I copied the .Rprofile from my laptop.  

If you have similar problems, simply do this in command line:

mv .Rprofile Rprofile

install.packages to your hearts desire and then

mv Rprofile .Rprofile
