Try the following

  x <- c("this is a string", "this is a numeric")

  reassemble <- function(x, ind) paste(x[ind], collapse=" ")

  vapply(strsplit(x," "), reassemble, "character", c(1, 4))

  [1] "this string" "this numeric"
