Yes. It was helpful indeed.

The four steps you outlined successfully helped me to install the newest version of R. I have been fiddling with this for days and I am quite grateful to all who contributed.
I formally posted to r-help_at_r-project.org before somebody suggested posting to r-sig-debian_at_r-project.org.
