Based on the question Uwe Ligges, I scrutinized my PATH settings and saw that my system administrators included a reference to a Cygwin installation (which caused problems).

Secondly my PATH contained NETBIOS mounted shares (e.g. \\sever\path) and directories containing whitespace. When I remove those also from my path (converting the whitespacecontaining  paths to the corresponding DOS names), I was able to compile the software based on Duncan Murdoch's instructions
