That's not correct.
http://www.r-project.org/mail.html (search for "attachment") explains that most ** binary ** attachments are not accepted, lists the exceptions and further says that text/plain is well accepted
(BTW, text/html is accepted too, but translated to text/plain  by the filters)

One problem is that many e-mail client programs do not seem to let you attach "text/plain" easily.
