Hi Simon --

?data indicates that the first file looked for is mydata.R, and then mydata.RData and so on. So add a file mydata.R to your data directory that contains R code to print a message and then loads the data. This hack is used in Bioconductor, e.g., the Biobase package

to indicated that some data sets are deprecated.
