I have tested in WinXP:

example:
> dir("C:/")

 [1] "Arquivos de programas"         "AUTOEXEC.BAT"
 [3] "boot.ini"                      "Bootfont.bin"
 [5] "CONFIG.SYS"                    "Debug"
 [7] "debug.log"                     "Desktop.ini"
 [9] "Dic"                           "Documents and Settings"

"Dic" is a folder
 any(dir("C:/")=="Dic")
[1] TRUE That are right?
