One possibility is:

x <- c(30.9, 60.1 , 70.0 , 73.0 , 75.0 , 83.9 , 93.1 , 97.6 , 98.8 , 113.9) for (i in 1:9) assign(paste("PAIR",i,sep=""),list(part1 = x[1:i],part2 = x[-(1:i)]))
