Try this:

x <- factor(c("220", "220a", "221", "221b", "B221")) pat <- "[^0-9]+" # match non-digits
nums <- as.numeric(gsub(pat, "", x))
has.lets <- as.numeric(regexpr(pat, x) > 0)
