for (i in 2:6)

    jaw[[paste("age", i, sep="^")]] = jaw$age^i

or

  m = outer(jaw$age, 2:6, "^")
  colnames(m) = paste("age", 2:6, sep="^")   jaw = cbind(jaw, m)
