I too had this problem with Firefox 3.0 and 3.0.1 (but not with 3.0 RC1 by the way).
A work-around which works for me is to go directly to the search engine page (enter URI
file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/R/R-2.7.1/doc/html/search/SearchEngin e.html on my Windows Vista installation), rather than going there by following the link on the R documentation page (file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/R/R-2.7.1/doc/html/index.html)
