Have a look at
?par

You need to have par(xpd = TRUE) and then use par("usr") to get the coordinates for the edges of the plot. Also make sure you have enough space around the plot to put the legend. For that, have a look at par(oma) or par(mar) etc.

I am trying to put legends underneath the plot (in the outer margins). Is there an easy way to do this. I have been tinkering with split..screen but I could not make it work.

Thank in advance

Jean
