It seems to me that if you want to alter the code of lda.default, you have everything you need to do so. The code is there, it is GPL'd and you can change it to your heart's content. But if you are suggesting that the lda function be changed for everyone, I'd be personally opposed to doing so. It behaves the way it should behave and if you're looking for a way to save yourself from the way it works, then make the change on a local copy of lda and you'll have solved the problem for you. For me, I vote for the status quo.
