a very simple answer as well

hist(x,ylim=c(0,0.5),prob=T) #this does work

xlim, ylim: the range of x and y values with sensible defaults. Note
		^^^^^^

          that 'xlim' is _not_ used to define the histogram (breaks),
          but only for plotting (when 'plot = TRUE').
