That's what I would recommend. You can even set

lattice.options(default.args = list(page = function(n)

    grid::grid.text(date(), x = 0.01, y = 0.01,

                    default.units = "npc", 
                    just = c("left", "bottom"))))

to do this for all plots by default without having to change any code.
