I don't know what Word does to the files, but within R see: ?dev2bitmap
you can choose among others: '"tiffg32d"', '"tiffg4"', '"tifflzw"', '"tiffpack"', '"tiff12nc"', '"tiff24nc"
depending on your content type you could also try png with a high resolution.
