Depends on the format of "the raw data".

Did you read Ch.7 of "An Introduction to R" which ships with R? Otherwise do so (and the rest of that manual too, for that matter).

I had a somewhat expanded coverage of data input in my ISCB course last year. You might get something out of browsing the handouts at
